Nuclear Energy for Offshore Ships

summary This article explores the use of nuclear energy as a reliable power source for offshore vessels with high energy demands, such as the Hidden Gem which operates far from the mainland. Three methodologies were used to select the reactor type, focusing on user requirements and categorizing numerous Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The Prismatic High-Temperature Reactor (HTR) with TRISO fuel was chosen for its superior safety, operational flexibility, economic benefits, and advanced technological readiness. For power generation, the secondary sCO2 Brayton cycle was selected for its compact size and higher efficiency, achieving up to 50% efficiency. Extensive permits are required for nuclear fuel management, with additional maritime regulations from the IMO, flag states, and port authorities. Developing a reactor in-house involves challenges such as design, fuel selection, heat conversion, and regulatory approval, but offers long-term operational benefits and environmental advantages. This project contributes to the broader development of nuclear energy by providing innovative solutions for energy provision in the shipping industry and expanding knowledge on the use of nuclear energy.
