Comparative Study on Hematobiochemical Profile of Bactrian Camels (Camelus Bactrianus) and Dromedary Camels (Camelus Dromedarius) Bred in Egypt

Bactrian camels (camelus bactrianus) or the two-humped camels inhabit parts of western china and central asia. There are no available studies regarding the normal values of hematology and blood biochemical parameters for bactrian camels bred in egypt. The aim of this study was to establish normal values for hematobiochemical parameters of bactrian camels and compare these parameters with those of dromedary camels under egyptian conditions. The study was included (n = 8; 4 non-pregnant female, 4 male, 8-10-year-old bactrian camels, and (n = 15; 5 non-pregnant female, 10 male, 6-8-year-old dromedary camels) apparently healthy animals. Blood samples were taken in the early morning by jugular vein puncture. In terms of hematology, the mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and monocytes count significantly (p<0.05) increased in the dromedary camels, while the red blood cell counts significantly increased (p<0.05) in the bactrian camels. Regarding serum biochemistry, there were significant (p<0.05) increases in the serum albumin concentration, the albumin/globulin ratio, calcium, magnesium, urea and creatinine in the bactrian camels compared to those in the dromedary camels, while alanine transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase increased significantly (p<0.05) in the dromedary camels. Although both bactrian and dromedary are from the genus camelus, it appears that some species variations exist between the two species in terms of hematobiochemical parameters. This study provides preliminary data on the blood constituents of bactrian camels bred in egypt. These findings may further help in establishing normal reference ranges for these parameters in large number of animals.
