An Innovative Vector Mechanics Approach for Prestressed Concrete Beam
Prestressed concrete (PC) structures are crucial in modern construction, offering enhanced load capacity and reduced cracking. This study introduces a novel approach using the vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) method to model PC beams, focusing on the influence of prestress tendons and tendon arrangements. A two-node PC beam element is derived and used to simulate axial-shortening effects, validated through simulations of four representative PC beam cases. A key aspect of this research is the qualification of the developed PC beam element through a rigid body motion test, ensuring an accurate representation of rigid body behavior under load. Additionally, parametric studies reveal that increasing concrete strength and tendon area significantly reduces axial shortening and prestress loss, enhancing the overall performance of PC beams. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing PC beam designs, contributing to more efficient and sustainable construction practices. Through rigorous pure bending tests and validations, the study demonstrates that the simplified yet robust PC beam element accurately predicts deflections and stresses across various prestressing scenarios. This research advances design methodologies in bridge engineering by demonstrating the ability of the VFIFE method to address both static and dynamic problems of prestressed concrete structures.
