Modernization and the Formation of Hybrid Compounds in Shina: An Exploratory Study

The study encompasses how modernization particularly in dominant languages like English and Urdu influences the Shina language. The borrowing of words from different languages causes hybrid compound words in the Shina language. To identify hybrid compounds in Shina language, we used qualitative methods to collect data through participant observation as proposed by Gehman (2013). To analyze the collected data, the analytical framework of the “Theory of Construction Morphology” as suggested by Booij (2009) has been used. This study explains what types of hybrid compounds exist in the Shina language and how they are formed in the Shina language by a combination of Noun + Noun and Adjective + Noun which is common in the Shina language. In Shina, there are many endocentric hybrid compounds as compared to the exocentric and exocentric present in the least frequently. This study contributed to identifying and highlighting the hybrid compounds and contributed to the preservation and documentation of the Shina language.
