Radiological Assessment of Skeletal Maturity: A Comparative Study of Hand-Wrist Radiographs and Cervical Vertebrae
This study compared the reliability of hand-wrist radiographs and cervical vertebrae maturation in assessing skeletal maturity in 100 Indian subjects (44 males, 56 females) aged 9-16 years. Results showed a positive correlation (r = 0.921, P < 0.0001) between the skeletal maturity indicators (SMI) and cervical vertebrae maturation indicator (CVMI) stages. Females were ahead of males at all levels of skeletal maturity indicators. The study suggests that cervical vertebrae maturation can be used as a reliable alternative to hand-wrist radiographs for assessing skeletal maturity.
