How to encourage patients to engage and stay in MOUD

An important monograph from William L. White and colleagues at Chestnut, “Medications for Opioid Use Disorder: Enhancing Retention to Achieve Long‐ term Remission and Recovery,” focuses on one of the best‐known “secrets” of treatment: the success of MOUD depends on whether patients adhere to and stay in treatment. And the monograph, released April 11, notes immediately the other lesser‐known secret is that most MOUD patients leave treatment prematurely. This increases the risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) relapse, and further psychosocial functioning problems, including harm to self, family, and community.
