Abstract

This paper employs Deconstructive Discourse Analysis to examine British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) news report about the killing to a teenager near Paris, during a traffic check. Report contains responses of various stakeholders as family, police union, Paris police chief, news analysts and politicians, rising concern about unjustified gunshot. An emotional plea of mother, to call for protest, judgmental remarks by politicians and police’s defensive role. Furthermore, discourse is shaped around legal process and legislative development in 2017, providing power to police for use of force. The analysis uncovers complex dynamics of narrative building and power struggle. Tension emerges among law enforcement agencies, political authorities and general public. Deconstructed discourse analysis explains multi lawyered phenomenon of contradictory narratives, power dynamics also the influence of media in a legal investigation. The study needs further academic research to explore the nuances of authorities and power dynamics within the backdrop of police violence and use of force when countering the general public.
