Transitional behavior of soils: a comprehensive analysis of related scientific production

Transitional geomaterials exhibit an intermediate mechanical behavior between sandy and clayey soils, not fitting entirely into either classification. To contribute to the understanding of the geomechanical behavior of these materials, this study conducts a review of the scientific literature on the subject, analyzing the evolution of research over the years. Through a qualitative and quantitative approach, the factors influencing the transitional behavior of soils were identified, as well as the main research objectives and gaps in the field. Additionally, key publications, journals, geographical locations, and authors contributing to the advancement of knowledge on the topic were mapped. The results indicate that grain breakage and sample preparation methodology do not directly influence transitional behavior. On the other hand, factors such as fine content and well-graded soils were highlighted as determinants of this behavior. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the transitional nature of geomaterials, supporting the development of new studies and practical applications in geotechnical engineering.
