Preparation and properties of copolymerized nanoparticle-modified basalt fiber/epoxy resin composites

With the widespread application of fiber-reinforced composites in the automotive, aerospace, and military industries, there is an increasing demand for Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymers (BFRPs) with enhanced strength and toughness to keep pace with rapid advancements in these fields. In this study, tannic acid (TA) was copolymerized with the silane coupling agent KH550 to form TA-KH nanoparticles, which were subsequently deposited onto the surface of basalt fibers. This surface treatment effectively improved the interfacial properties between basalt fibers (BF) and epoxy resin (EP), thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of BFRPs. Experimental results revealed that, compared to BF/EP, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of (TA-KH)-ABF/EP were increased by 39.0% and 53.2%, respectively. Additionally, the flexural and impact strengths were enhanced by 25.0% and 38.0%, respectively.

Abstract

With the widespread application of fiber-reinforced composites in the automotive, aerospace, and military industries, there is an increasing demand for Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymers (BFRPs) with enhanced strength and toughness to keep pace with rapid advancements in these fields.
