The Reliability Enhancement of Power System Using Distribution STATCOM Units with Enhanced Capacitive Reactive Power Operation
The share of electricity generation through renewable energy resources has exponentially increased from 10% to 30% from 2010 to 2022, and it is expected to grow to 42 % by 2028. Alternatively, distribution power losses and power quality are challenging in terms of grid efficacy, power quality, cost, etc. It has been established that flexible AC transmission systems are very helpful in the power system network for strengthening stability and efficacy. This paper presents the enhancement of the power system using the distribution STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) with improved capacitive reactive power operation. In addition, the constrains related to the influencing of capacitive reactive power limits are detailed. In this paper, the authors specify specific information of commercially accessible converter systems to support computations and estimate its control over the final solution. Reflecting the above, the planned approach is employed on a real 10 MW 6.6 kV medium voltage power converter model connected in 33 kV line and outcomes are quantified and assessed from a reactive power capacity, effectiveness and cost evaluation.
