Power Sharing Scheme for PV-Battery Type MG with Inclusion of Communication Link Failure
Increasing the contribution of renewable energy sources (RESs) is a vital contribution in mitigating the adverse effects of using fossils. Among various RESs, solar photovoltaic (PV) is most preferred one having maximum adoption due to the abundance of solar insolation on Earth. Because solar power output is variable, battery storage is often combined with PV to create a PV-battery system within a microgrid (MG). It is essential to ensure proper power distribution among the multiple units, especially under faulty conditions or component failures. The centralized secondary controller provides accurate power sharing among parallel PV-battery units via the low-bandwidth communication channels. However, system efficiency is highly affected when the communication channel is unavailable. Thus, the decentralized secondary control (DSC) algorithm needs updating to maintain a stable operation for individual units and the MG as a whole during communication outages. Additionally, the microgrid may form multiple separate networks or nano-grids due to scheduled maintenance or faults. To ensure stability and reliability within these isolated networks, the centralized decentralized secondary controller (CDSC) algorithm requires enhancements for effective power sharing among PV-battery units in the newly created networks. The PSCAD/EMTDC tool is utilized to simulate the modified EU distribution network for assessing the performance of this improved control scheme and results suggests some good outcomes.
