Cybersecurity Improvement of Power Electronic Converters in Grid-Tied PV System Integration
Technological advancement in the power electronics industry has led to a massive evolution of the conventional power system, allowing the integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the grid due to power electronic converters (PECs) enabling interface for coupling IBRs to the grid. As PECs become integrated, ensuring their cybersecurity is paramount for grid control and reliability. The remote-control functionality of grid-tied PECs has become susceptible to cyber threats. This paper examines the cybersecurity vulnerabilities of photovoltaic (PV)-based grid-tied PECs, focusing on shunt active power filters (SAPFs). The study targets potential cyberattack vulnerabilities in SAPFs by leveraging MATLAB/Simulink simulation tools. It will also evaluate the effects of the cyberattacks on them in addition to the vulnerabilities documented. By addressing cybersecurity challenges in PECs, this paper aims to enhance its reliability, contributing to the broader objective of fortifying power industry sectors against emerging cyber threats in the digital age.
