Streamlined Porting of UART Driver Using MCU Setup Tools for SystemView's Real-Time Transfer
We present a streamlined approach to porting a UART driver for SEGGER SystemView's Real-Time Transfer (RTT) protocol, enabling visualization of program execution on embedded systems. While SystemView traditionally relies on SEGGER's J-Link debug probe, UART-based RTT offers a cost-effective alternative. However, existing implementations often involve complex codebases, complicating porting efforts. We propose a modular design that separates MCU-specific UART configuration, which can be performed using MCU setup tools like STM32CubeMX, from the common driver logic. This approach significantly simplifies porting across different MCUs, reducing development time and effort. Our results highlight the practicality of this solution for developers seeking to integrate SystemView's RTT functionality into diverse embedded systems with minimal overhead and cost.
