Towards Automating Multi-Sample Electrical Impedance Data Collection with an Analog Discovery 2 Instrument

Combined hardware and software tools (or platforms) to measure electrical impedance over time are limited in functionality and availability. This is a serious barrier for studies of biological tissue impedance across conditions, time-scales, and with sufficient samples to generalize results. To address these limitations, hardware and software to measure electrical impedance using an Analog Discovery 2 instrument was developed. The hardware controls a relay system to collect bipolar measurements of up to 16 samples. The platform was validated by collecting experimental measurements (10 Hz to 100 kHz) from a resistor, capacitor, 2R-1C model, and Pea plant (Pisium sativum L.) as loads. The median magnitude deviations for these loads were 0.034%, 0.667%, 0.062%, and 9.56% respectively. A pilot graphical user interface was demonstrated to control the Analog Discovery 2 instrument and report collected data. The software and hardware functionality were validated and highlight how these could provide a platform to support further research automation for impedance studies.
