An Analogous Virtual Synchronous Machine-Based Virtual Inertia Control Strategy for Microgrid Applications

Modern power system (PS) demands the penetration of various types of renewable energy sources (RESs) through power electronic devices into the grid. But the main disadvantage of this RES penetration includes different types of stability problems like system-frequency oscillation, damping, moment of inertia etc. To mitigate this issue, a Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) strategy is used that takes the help of the rotor behaviour of the traditional synchronous generator (SG). It is observed from the literature that a synchronous generator provides both voltage(V) and frequency(<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$f$</tex>) support in PS. With the help of this V, f support, VSG can able to remove the different detrimental problems of the penetration of RESs in PS as mentioned previously. In this paper, the frequency of the inverter is found by using the swing equation of the SG and from this frequency of the inverter, the rotor angle is obtained. The entire system is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink® environment. It is observed from simulation results that during the transient condition, the rotor angle lies between 0° to 15°. So, the system is found to be stable irrespective of different load conditions.
