Speed Control of 3 Phase Induction Motors using Different PWM Techniques
Induction motors are widely favored for their reliability, affordability, and durability. While traditionally not capable of variable speed operation, recent advancements in speed control methods have made them ubiquitous in electrical drives. Out of the several methods of speed control of an induction motor the constant V/f speed control method is most widely used. This approach maintains a constant V/f ratio to keep the magnetizing flux stable, ensuring the torque remains consistent. Implementing V/f control involves modeling a PWM inverter feeding into the induction motor drive. MATLAB and Simulink were used to demonstrate both Open Loop using SPWM and Closed Loop V/f Control using SPWM and SVPWM techniques. Closed-Loop control with a Proportional Integral Controller and SVPWM technique emerged as a superior method for speed control while preserving the torque. Various parameters such as Power Consumption, Line Voltage and Current, Torque, Slip and Speed were thoroughly analyzed across these models.
