Documentation of Lipote (Syzygium Polycephaloides (C.B. Rob.) Merr) and Respondents' Knowledge and Experience towards Ecological and Economical Usefulness
Lipote is a native fruit tree that needs promotion and protection due to its usefulness. This species inhabits the lowland forests of the Philippines and faces the risk of becoming endangered. Documenting Lipote could serve as a baseline for determining the optimal timing for fruit and seed collection, aiding in preservation and tree planting efforts. Also, this study helps to promote the contribution of Lipote ecologically and economically to call out communities who were not aware and familiar in the species to value, conserve and protect native fruit trees and natural resources, to provide support from the government and non-government sector by including Lipote in their reforestation projects emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts to save them from scarcity. Additionally, assessing its ecological and economic significance provides valuable baseline data for the government and other institutions to support the promotion, market potential, protection, and conservation of Lipote. Thus, this study was conducted to document the development phases of Lipote and determine the economic and ecological importance, as well as its usefulness. Documentation of Lipote was performed through daily observation of chronological events of Lipote reproductive parts by the researcher, supplemented by interviews with respondents using a structured questionnaire. In data collection, purposive sampling was used to select the ideal respondents with familiarity, experience and knowledge of Lipote. This was followed by interviews using a structured questionnaire to obtain a comprehensive understanding of its economic and ecological benefits. Lipote bears fruit annually, typically once to three times a year, depending on environmental conditions. It is recommended to conduct further studies on the documentation of Lipote outside Aurora Province, as its growth and fruiting patterns appear to be influenced by local environmental conditions. Various benefits of Lipote have been experienced by tree owners; however, there is a lack of appreciation for its ecological and economic importance.
