Numerical Modeling of Land Movement from CO2 Storage
Abstract This study presents a numerical model to evaluate surface deformation resulting from CO2 injection into geological reservoirs. The model, based on Geertsma's Nucleus of Strain theory, predicts surface uplift by calculating contributions from discretized re servoir blocks using reservoir pressure profiles derived from simulation. A real-world case study demonstrated the model's capability to efficiently simulate 10 years of continuous CO2 injection, with maximum uplift correlating to high-pressure zones. The results validate the model as a practical tool for monitoring storage integrity and performance, particularly when combined with surface-based techniques like InSAR. The findings emphasize the importance of accurate geological input data to ensure reliable predictions and support the safe and effective implementation of CCUS projects.
