Horizontal Water Shut-Off Operations: A Worldwide Success Story
Abstract The deployment of a horizontal openhole mechanical plug, distinct for its lack of reliance on a cement cap, marks a significant advancement in water management techniques. This innovative mechanical openhole plug serves as a pivotal solution aimed at curbing excessive water production within reservoirs, thereby exerting effective pressure control. Beyond this primary objective, the pioneering openhole water shut-off system introduces substantial ancillary advantages. These encompass a notable reduction in CO2 emissions, enhanced operational efficiency, and potentially eliminating the need for workover operations. The modified openhole Plug introduces a unique approach to Mechanical Water Shut-off technology within the oil industry, specifically designed to fit uniform openhole sections. Its ultra-slim design facilitates safe deployment and retrieval through narrow wellbores, mitigating the risks associated with inflatable packers. Notably, its single-run setting and retrieval process significantly bolsters operational efficiency. Rigorous evaluations through lab and field tests substantiated its effectiveness in establishing a reliable radial seal within openhole sections. The two Modules of the technology Packer and Anchoring aims to provide energized seal at very high pressure and temperature variation and engage the plug mechanically to the openhole wall whenever it’s exposed to pressure. The operation of setting the openhole plug has worked as intended and met all the success criteria set for the trial test. Two success criteria for plug deployment was realized, secure placement within a gauged openhole and effective isolation of unwanted fluid for at least 6 months and analysis of prior water shut-off logging determined the plug's optimal setting depth crucial for stability and isolation. Post-deployment, promising results emerged, notably reflecting a significant reduction in produced water. After assessing the plug's performance for over 6 months, key recommendations for future water shut-off jobs have emerged. Precise plug setting depth selection is crucial for success, necessitating caliper and Gamma ray logs for optimal matching and depth assessment. Sustaining a moderate choke setting proves vital in enhancing the plug's efficacy in isolating downhole water. The integration of this novel technology represents a transformative step forward in addressing both technical and environmental challenges within the realm of water management.
