Development and performance study of modified cookstove burner for biosyngas as green fuel toward sustainable energy system
This study is focused on development of burner and utilization of biosyngas as green fuel for cookstove. The biosyngas was produced from waste biomass using downdraft gasifier . A commercially available self-aspirated cookstove burner (0.5 to 2.0 kW) for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was modified to operate with biosyngas as green fuel. The different burner heads with varying port diameters (2.0 to 6.0 mm) were developed and gas nozzle diameter was changed from 1 mm to 2 mm. Then experimental study was carried at different flow rates (10 to 30 LPM) of biosyngas. The maximum burner efficiency was found 43.2 % with 2.0 mm port diameter and gas flow rate of 30 LPM for community cooking; while for household cooking the burner with 4.0 mm port diameter and flow rate 10 LPM was found with burner efficiency 43.1 %. The biosyngas as green fuel is environment friendly and based on a case study; it was found that replacement of LPG by biosyngas offers cost savings of INR 576.0 per family (4 members) per year and saving of 0.4436 tons of CO 2 emission per year per family. The cost saving, about 4 % of yearly expenditure on LPG per family per year, may not be more appreciable, but biosyngas is renewable in nature and net CO 2 addition to the environment is zero. Therefore, burner optimization is required for different applications and biosyngas can be used for community cooking as green fuel for sustainable energy system . • Design modification in LPG burner for utilizing the biosyngas as green fuel for cooking applications. • The calorific value of biosyngas was found in the range from 3.5 MJ/Nm 3 to 4.5 MJ/Nm 3 . • The theoretical air-fuel ratio for combustion of biosyngas was found from 0.37 to 2.46. • The burner setup with ports diameter 4 mm performed better with the thermal efficiency of 43.1% at biosyngas flow rate 10 LPM. • The another burner setup with ports diameter 2 mm and biosyngas flow rate 30 LPM, performed with thermal efficiency of 43.1%.
