CUIDADOS DE ENFERMAGEM A PACIENTES COM DOR CRÔNICA ONCOLÓGICA: UMA ABORDAGEM CENTRADA NA PRÁTICA ASSISTENCIAL¹

Introduction: Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. A defining characteristic of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual limits and can invade adjacent parts of the body and spread to other organs, a process referred to as metastasis. Pain has a major impact on cancer patients, resulting in worsening prognosis or imminent death, hence the importance of a correct approach and treatment. Objective: to identify, through an integrative literature review, the available evidence on nursing care provided to patients with chronic cancer pain, highlighting the main strategies, challenges and contributions of professional practice in coping with this condition. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review carried out based on a survey of scientific articles in the databases of the Virtual Health Library – BVS, Scientific Electronic Library Online – Scielo, Public Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online – PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences – LILACS. The inclusion criteria were scientific articles made available in full, in Portuguese and English. The exclusion criteria were reviews (systematic, narrative and integrative), opinion articles, editorials and duplicate articles in the library and databases. Results: The search result generated a final sample of 7 articles with publication dates between 2015 and 2024, with the years 2015 and 2018 prevailing, which together corresponded to 57.1% (n=4) of the total. Regarding the source databases, the articles were indexed in the following platforms: PubMed 28.6% (n=2), BVS 57.1% (n=4), SciELO 14.3% (n=1), LILACS (0%). The analysis of the articles included in this integrative review was selected taking into account the objective set out in this study, and two categories were created: A) Nurses’ perception of the pain of cancer patients; B) Nurses’ actions to manage the pain of cancer patients. Conclusion: In this context, it was observed that nursing professionals have strategies, resources and instruments that favor a qualified and resolute approach, such as systematic assessment of pain, attentive listening to individual complaints, the use of integrative therapies and the continuous management of analgesics and other medications.
