Abstract

Istanbul, the capital of the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman Empires, still has its traces in civil, religious, educational and commercial structures with its multi-layered and multi-cultural identity. The Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Turks living in the city have also had their reflections in the city’s culture, art and architecture. Beyoğlu is the most important place in Istanbul with its location, historical past and cultural interaction. The district is distinguished by its embassies, hotels, passages, religious buildings, theaters and cinemas. It was the most important district for a period of cultural and artistic interaction. Within the scope of this study, the structures where events took place from the cinema screenings that started at the Sponeck Beer Hall in Beyoğlu to the Republic period were discussed. Pathe Cinema, where the first resident screening was held in Beyoğlu between 1910-1922, the hall that used to be the Odeon Theater and later became the Eclair Cinema, Oriental Cinema, Ideal Cinema, Santral Cinema, Apollon Cinema, Gaumont Cinema, Cine Palas Cinema, Royal Cinema, Municipal Cinema, Amphi Cinema, Cosmograph Cinema, Etoile Cinema, Majik Cinema and Alkazar Cinema, which were designed and used as the first cinema hall, were examined in the study from an architectural perspective. For Beyoğlu- Cinema, the concepts of memory, space and route were examined from a cultural perspective, the locations of the venues were determined on current maps and the architectural features of these venues and the purposes for which they are used today were determined. A suggested route was created by indicating the locations of the cinema venues on the map. This route was created manually and structured on the basis of map data. It aims to provide a base and reference point for digital mapping and cultural route systems to be developed in the future. Keywords: Beyoğlu, cinema, culture, route, space.
