Altered metabolic parameters and dietary patterns in women with uterine myomatosis

Background: Obesity has been described as a risk factor for uterine myomatosis (UM).This has prompted studies to determine whether alterations in different metabolic parameters, usually associated with obesity, are related to the development of myomatosis.Likewise, it is suggested that dietary patterns may play an important role in the genesis of this pathology. Objectives: Describe altered metabolic parameters and dietary patterns in women with UM.Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with UM, in whom nutritional status was assessed through anthropometry, medical history, and dietary evaluation, along with the measurement of certain biochemical parameters. Results: A total of 82% of the patients were overweight or obese. The most frequently observed metabolic parameters, in descending order, were waist circumference > 80 cm, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension. No association was found between the size of the myomas and any anthropometric or metabolic parameters.Six dietary patterns were identified, characterized by the consumption of meats, saturated fats, and sugars. Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is high, with at least one-third of the women presenting some metabolic alteration, most commonly hypertriglyceridemia. The diet of this group is rich in meats, fats, and sugars, with low vegetable intake, which is known to contribute to obesity -an established risk factor for UM.
