Surface modification of ground calcium carbonate by emulsion polymerization method and its utilization in PVC composite

In this study, Butyl acrylate (BA) and Methyl methacrylate (MMA) were utilized as monomers to modify ground calcium carbonate (GCC) particles through emulsion polymerization. The modified GCC (i.e., MGCC) particles were then blended with Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to prepare PVC matrix composites. FTIR, TGA, and water contact angle measurements confirmed the successful synthesis and performance enhancement of MGCC. The mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermal stability, and heat resistance were also analyzed to evaluate MGCC/PVC composites. The results indicated that MGCC exhibited strong interfacial compatibility with PVC, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the composite material. The impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength increase of 65.8%, 9.4%, and 8.8%, respectively, compared to GCC/PVC composite material.
