Drivers of Sustainable Urban Livelihood Entrepreneurship in Chennai

This paper investigates the economic factors underpinning sustainable livelihood entrepreneurship among street food vendors in Chennai, one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas. With projections that by 2030 nearly 50 % of the population—and 70 % of new employment—will be concentrated in urban centres, understanding how city ecosystems support small-scale entrepreneurs is critical. Focused on a densely populated commercial district generating roughly ₹200 000 million in annual revenue, the study employs a mixed-methods approach—surveying 150 vendors and conducting 30 in-depth interviews—to examine (i) enterprise viability and sustainability; (ii) primary risk elements and mitigation strategies; and (iii) policy levers for enhancing resilience and growth. Findings underscore the importance of affordable infrastructure, streamlined regulations, and accessible finance for entrepreneurial sustenance. Recommendations are aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (inclusive economic growth and decent work) and SDG 16 (effective, accountable institutions), offering targeted strategies for policymakers to foster resilient urban livelihoods.
