Multi-Hop Satellite Communications Link Analysis in the South Pacific Region

Multi-hop satellite communication has a very important role to play in enhancing the existing communication network in far and wide-flung regions like Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Vanuatu, and other South Pacific Island nations where such islands are dispersed, which makes it difficult to set up better communications systems. The analysis of the multi-hop satellite communication link is performed with MATLAB for this project and addresses such problems of the South Pacific countries as having a ground station in Port Vila, Vanuatu, and the other in IIT Delhi, India, with such extensive ocean coverage and with many sparsely inhabited islands. Signal propagation models, link budgeting estimation, and multiple hop relay are used in this process, while the performance evaluation is done in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER), and bandwidth usage efficiency. Through this work, using the powerful MATLAB simulation tools, it is possible to get important findings on how to balance the number of satellite middle hops required for reliable communication with the minimal possible latency and maximum coverage area. The current findings suggest that the multi-hop setup greatly increases link reliability and reduces the need for high-power transmitters, making the enhancement of communication infrastructure in the South Pacific more cost-effective. Thus, this work imposes current and aspiring improvements toward applying the satellite communication systems applicable to rural and remote areas in the given region.
