Study and Experimental Analysis of High-Performance Low-Power ALU Using FinFET Device

The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) is an important component of the CPU that is used to perform arithmetical and logical operations. This paper proposes the FinFET-ALU. It can do five operations: AND, OR, addition, subtraction, and Set Less-Than (SLT) operations. It works with 18nm FinFET technology and runs on 0.6 V. There's a 4-to-1 multiplexer built using the transmission gate technique. This has an inverter at the output to help create that full swing output. For original output, inverted input is provided, the AND & OR tasks use inputs as NAND & NOR, making it perform really well. A 10-transistor (10T) full adder is used. This adder gives us an inverted carry-out, which helps with the Set Less-Than (SLT) operation. If <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$A < B$</tex>, that's true it gives a high signal otherwise, it goes low. For subtraction It uses a 2-to-1 multiplexer together with the full adder. It only consumes 162.3 nW of power. The rise time is about 607.113 ps, and the fall time is just 58.893 ps. Abstract

And it has a high noise margin <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(NM_{H})$</tex> of 348.2401 mV and a low noise margin <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(NM_{L})$</tex> of 228.24003 mV.
