Towards Spatial Introspection and Experiential Prospection: A Speculative Design Inquiry in Extended Reality

Introspection involves examining one’s thoughts, memories, feelings, and mental processes to gain deeper self-awareness, while prospection refers to envisioning future scenarios and outcomes. In this speculative design inquiry, we present four design proposals that explore how XR combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and personal spatial memory (XRMemory) data collected from XR glasses could generate alternative perspectives on one’s life to support introspection and prospection. We conclude by examining the broader implications of our work, including ethical considerations and promising directions for future research in designing introspective and prospective XR experiences.
