Design and Implementation of a SiC MOSFET-Based Synchronous Bidirectional DC-DC Converter for Light Electric Vehicle Applications

The increasing demand for cost-effective and efficient motor drive systems for electric vehicles (EVs) has led to innovative approaches tailored to light two-wheeled vehicles, such as scooters and motorcycles. This paper presents a silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET-based bidirectional DC-DC converter designed for permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motor drive systems in low-cost EV applications. The proposed system operates in boost mode for motor driving and buck mode for regenerative braking, enabling bidirectional energy flow between the battery and motor. By leveraging the superior switching characteristics of SiC devices, the design achieves higher efficiency and compactness compared to traditional silicon-based systems. The simplicity of PMDC motors, combined with the cost-effectiveness of the bidirectional converter, offers a compelling alternative to inverter-based brushless DC motor (BLDC) systems. Simulation and experimental results validate the system's performance, demonstrating seamless transitions between operating modes, stable voltage and current waveforms, and effective energy recovery during regenerative braking. These findings highlight the potential for integrating SiC-based power electronics into affordable, reliable EV powertrains, paving the way for enhanced energy utilization and extended vehicle range. This work contributes to the development of simplified, scalable, and commercially viable solutions for low-cost EVs, addressing the growing demand for sustainable urban transportation.
