Honeypot-Based Security System for Intrusion Detection and User Protection

The world is becoming increasingly digital day by day, and cyberattacks are rising in both volume and complexity, imposing huge threats to the personal and organizational domains. Firewalls and antivirus programs, which had been developed to provide security for individuals and organizations, fail to effectively respond to new intrusion tactics. The honeypot-based security system designed in this paper detects and reacts to unauthorized accesses in a stealthy manner. The system identifies correct and incorrect login credentials and provides access to legitimate users while sending suspected intruders to a decoy site, which creates the impression that the login attempt has been successful. This setup captures valuable intruder data such as IP address, geolocation, attempted passwords, and webcam captured images without alerting the intruder. The system automatically sends an alert email to the registered user, with key details like location data and the intruder's photo if an intrusion is detected after multiple failed login attempts. It was tested to log unauthorized activities reliably and issue the necessary notifications on time, which makes it practical and effective in detecting suspicious access. This approach shows how honey pots can be integrated into proactive, cyber-enhancement strategies, providing an insight and advancement for future intrusion detection strategies.
