Tuning of Piezoelectric Energy Harvester for Self-Powered Pacemaker Application
This paper explores the design, simulation, and optimization of a fan-folded piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) for pacemaker applications. The objective of this work is to develop a self-sustaining energy source by capturing mechanical vibrations from human heartbeats, reducing the dependency on traditional batteries. In this study, a five-beam fan-folded PEH structure has been optimized to achieve a resonant frequency below 5 Hz, aligning with the low-frequency range of human physiology using COMSOL 6.2 Multiphysics software.6.2. Through iterative adjustments in beam length, tip mass, and beam thickness, this work successfully reduced the fundamental resonant frequency from 13 Hz to 2 Hz, achieving a more effective frequency match with physiological vibrations. This work underscores the potential of fan-folded PEH designs to enhance pacemaker longevity, reduce battery replacement surgeries, and improve patient quality of life. Future steps include experimental validation to support integration and performance in real-world applications.
