From Tabletop to Augmented Reality: Exploring Navigation Mesh and Waypoint Navigation Approaches in Role-Playing Game Transformation
This paper explores the transformation of traditional, non-digital multi-player entertainment, such as tabletop gaming, into immersive Augmented Reality (AR) social experiences through the design and implementation of a virtual role-playing game. The project utilizes AR technology to integrate physical game elements with interactive digital components, creating a hybrid environment that enhances user engagement. An initial assessment of two navigation systems, i.e., a navigation mesh for free-form movement and a Waypoint system for structured navigation, explores their impact on user experience, focusing on intuitiveness, immersion, and interaction dynamics. Our preliminary findings highlight the potential of AR to enrich gameplay by fostering deeper engagement and reimagining user interaction in virtual spaces. We also discuss design recommendations and future development possibilities, offering insights for enhancing interactivity in AR applications.
