The features of the translation of the individually authored phraseological units by A. P. Chekhov into English

The purpose of the study is to identify the main translation techniques for translating A. P. Chekhov’s individually authored phraseological units from Russian into English used in the plays “The Seagull” and “The Cherry Orchard”. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the results of a comparative analysis of eight translations of plays (published between 1912 and 2015) allow us to consider possible ways of rendering the above-mentioned lexical units and identify translation problems that still remain unresolved. The author identified six individually authored phraseological units of A. P. Chekhov. As a result of the research, the following methods of their translation into English have been established: literal translation, the use of idioms equivalent in meaning to the English language; the use of English idioms that cannot be considered equal in meaning to the phraseological units of the source text; descriptive translation; grammatical substitutions; the technique of omission; antonymic translation; the technique of contextual substitution. Cases of distortion of the original text have been identified, such as the loss of the metaphorical meaning of individually authored phraseological units when they are translated into English and violation of the stylistic coloring of the text.
