Flashcards with Local Culture Themes to Enhance Reading Literacy for Children Aged 4-5 Years
This study aims to explore the implementation of syllable flashcards themed around local culture to stimulate the literacy skills of children aged 4-5 years at BA Aisyiyah Tanjungsari. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation methods. Data analysis techniques followed the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that the use of syllable flashcards themed around local culture is effective in increasing children's reading interest and basic literacy skills. The implementation of Javanese-themed syllable flashcards is carried out in several stages; 1) introduction of materials: the teacher introduces flashcards containing syllables and images related to Javanese culture, such as wayang, batik, and traditional dances; 2) learning activities: children are invited to recognize and arrange syllables into simple words using the flashcards. They also read and write the syllables obtained, followed by watching videos related to Javanese culture; 3) assessment and evaluation activities: children are given assessments and rewarded for their achievements. The impact on children's literacy includes; 1) increased reading interest: children show greater enthusiasm for reading due to the attractive images and themes; 2) basic reading skills: children begin to recognize syllables and can arrange words with the help of visual aids from the flashcards; 3) appreciation for local culture: Children start to recognize and appreciate Javanese culture through the images on the flashcards.
