Icosahedral phases in the melt-spun Al–Fe–V alloys
Abstract This study explores the unique characteristics of quasicrystalline (QC) phase formation in melt-spun Al–Fe–V alloys, examining how it varies based on the content and ratio of transition metals (TM). Studies have shown that alloys featuring a Fe to V ratio of 2:1 or 1:2, along with an aluminum content ranging from 82 to 94 at. %, tend to favor the formation of various icosahedral ( i ) phases. Structural parameters were studied by x-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was revealed that alloys with half the Fe content formed the i 1 phase with larger quasicell parameters and lower microstrains built from Fe-centred icosahedral clusters [Fe 1 V 1 Al 11 ]V 1 . The Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) results indicate that i 1 phase melt at 1025 K and i 2 phase melt at 1035 K.
