Resistance of local rice varieties to Nilaparvata lugens Stal. (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) in West Sumatra Province, Indonesia

Abstract The resistance of local rice varieties to Nilaparvata lugens offers significant benefits, including cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and ease of application in rice cultivation. This study aimed to obtain rice varieties resistant to N. lugens in rice cultivation. This research was conducted at the Pest Disease Observation and Biological Agents Development Laboratory, Food Plant and Horticulture Protection Center of West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This study used a completely randomized design consisting of 5 treatments (local superior varieties) and ten replications. The local superior varieties used were Bawaan, Junjung, Anak Daro, Batang Piaman, and IR 42. The resistance level of rice plants to N. lugens was measured based on the area of honeydew spots and observations of N. lugens mortality. The results showed that varieties with moderate resistance were Bawaan and Junjung. Then, varieties with a moderately susceptible level are Anak Daro, IR 42, and Batang Piaman. Meanwhile, based on the N. lugens mortality test, the highest mortality at 24 hours was in the Bawaan and Junjung varieties, with a mortality value of 25%, while the highest mortality at 48 hours was in the Junjung variety, with a mortality value of 50%.
