Chemical characteristics of biochar from marine organic waste: an innovative solution for sustainable marine organic waste management

Abstract Marine organic waste on Kuala Indah Beach needs innovation in its management. One of them is making biochar from marine organic waste. However, it is not yet known for certain what the biochar content is. This study examines the chemical characteristics of biochar produced from marine organic waste as an innovative solution for sustainable waste management at Kuala Indah Beach, Batu Bara Regency. Marine Organic Waste has been collected from Kuala Indah Beach’s (99°28′0″E and 3°22′0″N), which was converted into biochar using Pyrolysis Kiln in Retort mode. Biochar from marine organic waste (B-MOW) was produced through high temperature pyrolysis (400°C). It has macronutrients (1.26% Nitrogen, 0.37% Total P 2 O 5 , 0.15% K 2 O, 0.81% Ca, and 0.44% Mg) and micronutrients (12.47 ppm Cu, 1.04% Fe, 0.10% Mn, and 66.19 ppm Zn). The B-MOW has a high carbon (34.58%), pH (6.89), and Cation Exchange Capacity (40.52 me/100), so it can improve soil quality and agricultural productivity and contribute to climate change mitigation.
