Sensing Flexural Strain and Temperature Simultaneous via Compact RFID Patch Antenna Sensor

Developing Radio frequency identification (RFID) antenna-based sensors is receiving increasing attention for structural health monitoring. This study presents a compact RFID antenna sensor intended for flexural strain applications. The performance of the antenna sensor is investigated with regard to various parameters, including detecting varying strains and temperatures. Detailed descriptions of the experimental setup and measurement outcomes are provided. The sensitivity of the antenna sensor towards applied strain and temperature is determined as 1.5 kHz/με and 13 kHz/℃, respectively. Experimental findings demonstrate that the antenna sensor can effectively assess both strain and temperature simultaneously. It has been demonstrated that the sensor antenna introduces a cost-effective technology capable of detecting both strain and temperature, thereby opening up new possibilities for systems used in structural health monitoring.
