Just Talk, and Sticky Notes will be Created: Towards Collaborative Dialogue in Face-to-Face Workshops the Experiment with a Generative AI-Based

Taking visible notes is essential for enhancing productivity and creativity in workshops. Facilitators or participants often engage in dialogues while simultaneously jotting down opinions or capturing emerging ideas. However, focusing on note-taking can cause them to miss comments or lose track of the discussion. This raises the question: “Does note-taking for better collaboration hinder shared understanding and disrupt dialogues?” To explore this, we developed a tool that automates note-taking by displaying sticky notes in real-time on a digital whiteboard. We investigated: “Can generative AI tools preserve the value of note-taking while maintaining focus on dialogues in collaborative workshops?” The experiment showed that the tool increased participant engagement in dialogues, confirming its utility. However, it also highlighted potential benefits and drawbacks of automating note-taking. We discuss ways to address limitations and prevent losses caused by the automation of note-taking with generative AI.
