VibroCushion: Design for Inclusive Connectedness between Deaf and Hearing in Mindfulness Practice

We present VibroCushion, a vibrotactile system designed to support inclusive mindfulness practices for Deaf and hearing individuals. By delivering vibrotactile stimuli, VibroCushion enhances meditation by improving body awareness and fostering connectedness. Through co-design workshops with Deaf novices, hearing instructors, and Korean Sign Language (KSL) interpreters, the system was iteratively developed to meet the specific needs of Deaf participants. Mindfulness sessions demonstrated that shared vibrotactile stimuli promoted focus, immersion, and a sense of connection between Deaf participants and hearing instructors. Furthermore, VibroCushion shows promise as an assistive tool for emotional communication and inclusive group practices, addressing sensory and social barriers. Our study highlights the potential of VibroCushion to enhance mindfulness and foster meaningful connections in diverse communities, contributing to the broader discourse on inclusive design and haptic interaction.
