Orchestrating Intermediary Organizations in Universities to Enhance Technology Transfer
Abstract Incentives for the creation of different types of intermediary organizations within universities must be accompanied by efforts aimed at their integration into the technology transfer ( TT ) process. This study proposes a meta-model for the integrated management of TT , focusing on the interface between research centers and technology transfer offices ( TTO ) in the university context. Using a qualitative approach, we examined research centers at the University of São Paulo ( USP ), set up to foster TT , and their relationship with the USP Innovation Agency ( AUSPIN ), which serves as the university’s TTO . The proposed model emphasizes the importance of the interface between research centers and TTO s for developing TT competencies and better leveraging the various TT channels. The model was structured around three main pillars: (i) an appropriate governance structure in the research centers; (ii) well-defined TT processes and activities; and (iii) effective interface mechanisms to enhance communication and integration between research centers and the TTO . The evidence presented offers valuable insights for research center managers, TTO s, and funding agencies, highlighting strategies to optimize governance, streamline TT processes, and enhance integration mechanisms.
