Enhanced Performance of Wind Energy Harnessing Systems Under Variable Wind Speed Fluctuations Through a New Technique Based on a Sliding Mode Control Strategy
ABSTRACT This paper introduces a new control approach that integrates traditional sliding mode control with guidance law to create a new control law, guidance law sliding mode control (GLSMC), tailored for the mechanical system of a three‐blade horizontal axis variable‐speed wind turbine. A key motivation for this study is to address the common issue of the chattering phenomenon in existing sliding mode controllers, reduce mechanical stress on the drivetrain, achieve faster convergence, and enhance performance in wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). The proposed controller is designed to boost the reliability, availability, and efficiency of the WECSs, particularly under significant wind speed fluctuations. Simulation results demonstrate that the new control technique achieves the desired outcomes, including precise tracking, robust stability, significant chattering phenomenon reduction, and a faster response time, even with varying random wind speeds.
