Multilingual Education and NEP 2020: Challenges and Opportunities

This paper examines the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on its multilingual education mandate and its implications for India’s diverse linguistic landscape. NEP 2020 advocates mother-tongue-based instruction at the foundational level, emphasizing its cognitive, sociological, and psychological benefits as supported by empirical research. However, implementing multilingual education poses challenges, including teacher shortages, resource constraints, sociocultural resistance, and policy inconsistencies. This study analyzes these barriers and proposes evidence-based solutions, such as expanding teacher training, leveraging technology for multilingual resources, fostering community engagement, and ensuring flexible policy implementation. By addressing these challenges, India can create an inclusive and effective multilingual education system. The paper argues that NEP 2020 has the potential to transform Indian education, but its success depends on strategic reforms, coordinated policymaking, and investment in linguistic diversity.
