Bangla Euphemism: a Linguistic Analysis

Euphemism is a linguistic technique that people consciously use instead of harsh, bad, vulgar, indecent, ominous or offensive words. The formation and use of euphemism is a common linguistic process. Euphemisms are used in every society influenced by various social, cultural, political or religious factors. These substitutions develop based on each society's prevailing customs. Drawing inspiration from renowned linguist Muhammod Abdul Hai's article, 'Subhashan,' this piece delves into the concept of euphemism by exploring its etymology, history, reasons for creation, characteristics, classifications and linguistic analyses of sound and word form, semantic and sociolinguistic perspectives, contextual understanding, non-verbal concepts and euphemism's prevalence in the mass media.
