MAPPING OF AIR QUALITY DISTRIBUTION AND ITS EFFECTS OVER PARTS OF LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

The paper investigated the assessment of air pollution reduction and eradication that have been significant environmental issues globally because of their contribution to the large percentage of climate change which has threatened many communities. There is therefore need to mapping of air quality distribution and its effect over parts of Lagos State, Nigeria. Both secondary and primary sources of data collection were employed in the study. The study involved incorporating air pollution data from field measurements into digital map layers to illustrate the application of spatial analysis for the study area. Mapping of areas of different concentrations of air quality within the study area was carried out using a kriging type of interpolation method in Arc-GIS 10.8 environment. The results of the revealed that nitrogen oxide (N02) affects air quality distribution more in Oshodi with a mean value of 47.70µg/m³, followed by Ikeja with the mean value of 45.58µg/m³ and then Mushin with a mean value of 43.7µg/m³. It is less in Alimosho and Agege with a mean value of 34.44µg/m³ and 34.40µg/m³ respectively. The spread of much quantities of nitrogen oxide present in the air mostly in Oshodi, Ikeja and Mushin is as a result of human activities like the combustion of fossil fuels i.e. coal, gas and oil as used in cars and from industries. While the distribution of particular matter 2.5 (PM2.5) on air quality over Ikeja, Agege, Alimosho, Oshodi and Mushin. These result showed that the airborne particles from 2.5µm in diameter and below affects air quality mostly in parts of Agege with a mean concentration of 81.72µg/m³. It is then followed by Mushin with a mean concentration of 59.40µg/m³ and less in Alimosho and Oshodi with the mean concentrations of 45.81µg/m³ and 45.34µg/m³ respectively. The study recommended that Strengthening regulatory frameworks and enforcement to combat pollution from industrial, vehicular emission and other related human activities and there is need to encourage sustainable industrial practices to include but not limited to cleaner production technology and reducing pollutant emissions.
