Experiences from Chile: Secondary School Biology Teachers’ Perspectives on Programmes and Scientific Literacy
Science education promotes critical thinking and literacy, enabling informed decision-making and responsible citizenship. A study involving 21 secondary biology teachers in Chile explored their perceptions of scientific literacy programs. Teachers from both private and state schools acknowledged the importance of these programs in enhancing scientific literacy. However, disparities in socio-economic status and school types affected the effectiveness of teaching practices, highlighting inequalities in training and resources. The findings underscore the impact of socio-economic factors and school segregation on teachers’ ability to foster scientific literacy in their classrooms.
