Toceranib phosphate‐associated diabetes mellitus in a dog
Abstract A 6‐year‐old, male, crossbreed dog presented with generalised weakness and an episode of collapse. Hypoglycaemia was documented, and computed tomography revealed a pancreatic nodule and loco‐regional lymph node enlargement. A right partial pancreatectomy and lymph node extirpation were performed, and histopathology confirmed metastatic insulinoma. Post‐surgery, clinical signs resolved, and toceranib phosphate therapy was initiated. Four months later, the dog developed polyuria, polydipsia, hyperglycaemia and glucosuria, consistent with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a recognised complication of partial pancreatectomy, typically occurring in the immediate postoperative period. However, in this case, diabetes developed months later, potentially linked to toceranib phosphate therapy, as reported in human studies. Insulin therapy was initiated, resulting in good glycaemic control. This case highlights the uncommon onset of diabetes mellitus in dogs treated with toceranib phosphate and underscores the need for monitoring and long‐term management in affected patients.
