A Proactive Approach for Securing VANETs Against Gray-Hole Attacks

VANETs are embedded in roads to improve the safety attributes and efficiency of traffic movement due to real-time communication from vehicles to roadside infrastructures. However, VANET is very susceptible to security attacks;grayhole attack was identified as one of the biggest risks. In a gray hole attack, a rogue node selectively drops packets without giving any notice, which could put the communication in danger. Based on the described trust-based framework for detecting anomaly-based grayhole attacks and mitigating, it will thus provide a proactive solution regarding the security aspect for VANETs. Our approach is put into practice and tested using NS-3, simulating a dynamic VANET environment with various traffic scenarios for performance evaluation. The strategy proposed would seem to encourage the system packet delivery ratio through suppression of gray hole attacks but with a latency that will not increase the network latency sharply. This will provide VANETs with an extremely efficient security mechanism and ultimately create safer and more reliable networks for the vehicular communication system.
