A High Voltage Power Supply With a Hybrid Full Wave Voltage Multiplier Featuring Low Voltage Ripple and Voltage Drop

High voltage power supplies with voltage multipliers (VMs) show high feasibility due to their low voltage stress on the components. But as for the traditional VMs, the more stages, the higher output voltage drop (OVD) and higher output voltage ripple (OVR) when using the same number of capacitors, then high-voltage components and wide regulation range for the inverter may be required to achieve a stable output voltage. This paper proposes a high voltage power supply with a hybrid full-wave VM (HFWVM), which is derived from several full-wave Dickson VM sets connected in Cockcroft-Walton(CW) way (series stacked). It features lower OVR, lower OVD, and faster start-up time compared with other VMs under the same voltage stress level on the components, especially in high voltage output applications. In this paper, the detailed derivation process and analysis of the proposed HFWVM are presented. The OVD and OVR are derived along with the operational mode. Comparison with other VMs is also carried and it demonstrates the advantages of the proposed HFWVM in OVR and OVD. Finally, a 2.8kW/15kV output prototype is built, and the results convincingly demonstrate the applicability and the analysis of the high voltage power supply and the advantage of the HFWVM.
