Sustainability of winter wheat cultivation in Russia

The paper deals with the problems of winter wheat cultivation in fields. Over the last 20 years Russia has become a major player in the global agricultural market stage. It is noted that due to climate change the most valuable for production are adaptive high-yielding varieties with high potential of baking quality. The problem of grain quality and yield is an integrating indicator of interaction between variety genotype, weather conditions of a particular year, soil-climatic factors and agronomic practices. Optimal crop management practices (including irrigation, fertilizer application, pest/disease control and weed control) and improvement of wheat varieties contribute significantly to maintaining or increasing wheat grain yield under unfavorable conditions. Therefore, the use of new high-yielding varieties with adaptation to specific growing conditions will increase yield and bulk yield of high-quality grain in all areas of cultivation of this valuable crop.
